Modul Fundamental Ecotoxicology (Master Biotechnologie)

combines lecture and practical course. At the moment only the lecture will be offered due to the move of the laboratory to new rooms.

History of ecotoxicology, uptake processes, biotransformation, cytochrome P-450 & co, conjugationenzymes, oxidative stress damages and protection,  molecular Initiating events (MIE´s) and adverse outcome pathways (AOP´s), heavy metals & metallothionins, human & veterinary pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, cyanobacterial toxins, nanomaterial and microplastic, ecotoxicology and biodiversity, applied ecotoxicology.

"Only together they are strong - Organic Chemistry in Applied Ecotoxicology"


Lecture 1

Structural Organic Chemistry in Ecotoxicology

Methods of structural chemistry in assessment of ecotoxicological effects of organic xenobiotics are described. Molecular initiating events and Adverse outcome pathways. Fate modeling on structural properties, the use of model substance yes and structure-specific methods are discussed.


Lecture 2

Chemistry of organic pollutants in ecotoxicology with special focus on agrochemicals.

Persistant organochlorines, PCB, dioxins and pesticides such as carbamates, pyrethroids and pyrethrins are discussed. Their behaviors in the environment and effects on biota.


Lecture 3

Principles in Ecotoxicology

Uptake and distribution of xenobiotics in organisms, biotransformation phases and enzyme systems, reactive oxygen species, oxidative stress, lipidperoxidation, proteinperoxidation, DNA damage, anti oxidative defense, tocopherols, ascorbate, glutathione, liponic acid, enzyme based defense, superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidases.


Lecture 4

Water - a highly necessary resource and how we treat or should treat this resource.

What is "water", the chemical point of view, water crisis in a global perspective, political water programs, facts about safe water, drinking water, climate change effects, how we use water, sustainable water use, water from extraterrestrial point of view.


Lecture 5

Green Liver Systems - A sustainable way of water purification

Using aquatic macrophytes for water purification, examples from Brazil, South Korea, PR China and Africa will be presented.



Environmental Disasters

Students will prepare short (15min) presentations on environmental disasters, discuss the measures taken and the impact on environment and humans. Scientific content of the presentation as well as the presentation style (soft skills) will be discussed.
